Last night Walt and I sat and watched on the Oxygen channel "The Notebook" with James Garner. I know it got rave reviews when it came out and now I can see why. A real tearjerker of a love story. When it finally is brought to light that he is talking about his own relationship with his wife, wow! She might be alright for as much as five minutes and then his wife is gone, bye bye into a world that he could not comprehend. What pain and sorrow.
I have only known Walt, as of this post, eleven years. We met in May of 1998.
I wonder what measures I will take if his mind gets that far away. I am fairly positive that I do not have the patience to read our love story to him day after day, week after week, in hopes he will be his old self for a few minutes.
I ponder the what ifs regularly. I also ponder the practical matters that need to be addressed. I have been advised to seek out an Elder Care attorney to draw up whatever necessary paperwork. We will need Living Wills, Power of attorneys, Wills, and appoint a medical advocate for each of us.
I am a willing participant in all of these legal necessities however, my partner in crime, is dragging his feet about doing anything at all. Now, I have to figure out a way to change his mind and get a fire lit under him.
He is going to Reno in a few short days to close out a storage unit we have out there. Once he comes home, I am going to nag him into action.
I think the best approach for us is to consult with our pastor. Our church has a pastor just for senior matters. We are seniors and now we have problems that are going to trip us unless we tend to them.
If you haven't seen "The Notebook" please, take time, rent the movie and enjoy a good love story with consequences you and I rather not imagine.
