Lets Do Reno......

In April of 1998 my dad died from complications of Parkinson's. A month later a dear friend of mine died. Within this same time frame I was on my computer one day, just surfing along without a thought in my head.

Lets put it this way, I was trying my best not to dwell on my losses and grief. I ran across an ad in the Personals on AOL and was reading away and one of the ads caught my eye. The header said: "Lets Do Reno". That was definitely intriguing. After all, I lived 35 miles from Reno in Carson City, Nevada.

So, I proceeded to read the ad. It was from this fellow, a few years older than me, who was interested in meeting someone who might like a trip to Reno and the gaming that goes on there. I, totally out of my element, decided to answer the ad. I explained that I was only 35 miles from Reno, that I worked in a casino and yes, I was an older lady and single.
We proceeded with this Internet friendship and every evening we would do a lot of instant messaging back and forth. Finally, came the day that he said he would like to meet me. He said he would come to Carson City on a weekend.

I was floored and still intrigued. Maybe this would ease my funk.

I worked in a casino and all of my fellow employees were either delighted or horrified. What! You are going to meet a man who "picked you up" on the Internet? Or, I would get the "go for it, girl". Both groups were equally adamant that I take extreme caution in setting up the first meeting. I heeded the warnings and with some trepidation we set a meeting to occur while I was still working my shift at the casino. Thereby, everyone with all of their concerns could witness this event.

The Friday arrived and my Internet date showed up as promised to my place of work. I, trying to be coy, did not acknowledge him at first. Finally, I approached him and said "hi".

We hit it off instantly, have been together ever since. As of this accounting we have been together over ten years, close to eleven and married 5 1/2 of those years. So, the next time someone suggests that you do something that is not your "thing" such as doing Reno, try it, you may find yourself pleasantly surprised....
